Unit Code: OT042-712
Pre or Co-requisites: No
The story of Saul, Samuel, and the rise and kingship of David is one of the most familiar parts of the Old Testament for most Bible readers today. Yet the biblical writers were far more clever than we realize; beneath the surface-level story lie hidden cross-currents of political interests, family and tribal loyalties and subtle theological themes, all communicated using complex literary ploys that the casual reader might easily miss.
There is more here than David’s accuracy with a slingshot. Does the ark convey the presence of God or not? Can David escape the charge of being a “man of blood”? What is the true sanctuary? The legitimate priesthood? What is the value of a life? What do we conclude if the biblical narrator questions the judgment of a prophet he presents? What is the true promise of the Davidic covenant? This unit takes a look behind the curtain on the stage of Israel’s rising monarchy in 1 & 2 Samuel and seeks the story’s relevance for living today.
