History of Christianity in Australia
6 September | 9.30am - 1pm
Dr Jude Long
MST
History isn’t just fascinating, it’s important. Knowing where we come from can speak to our sense of identity and give us wisdom as we make decisions for the future.
History of Christianity in Australia is a vital subject for all Australian Christians because it analyses the major phases and developments of Christianity in Australia in their political and social contexts.
This unit will cover topics such as: Colonial chaplaincy and the challenges of a convict settlement, education, mission to Indigenous peoples, relationship with the State, the rise of denominations, the World Wars, White Australia Policy, the rise of different movements in Australia (such as the Pentecostal movement), and women in ministry.
It also considers the more recent debates within the wider community surrounding issues like abortion, conservation, and poverty.
The study of philosophy trains us to think critically. This is invaluable for students of the Bible and theology because it allows us to examine ideas at their foundational level.
In order to think critically about theology, biblical studies, ethics, history and spirituality we must have some understanding of the philosophical approaches that undergird these disciplines. This helps us become proficient theological thinkers who are able to explain and defend the Christian faith with analytical accuracy and critical acumen.
The most influential Christian minds throughout history have all been astute philosophical thinkers. This unit introduces students to philosophy in a way that is clear and accessible by framing philosophy as a one long discussion stretching from its beginnings in the Greek period, to the present. Students receive a bird’s-eye perspective on the key themes of philosophy with particular emphasis on how it relates to Christian thought.

Islam is the second largest religion in the world so it’s important that Christians understand it.
This unit provides students with general knowledge on Islam’s foundation, its spread and other key characteristics. It introduces students to the diversity within the Muslim faith and enhances the capacity of students to engage as a Christian with the Muslim world.
Foundations for Faith is a much needed introduction and survey of Christian theology. Our understanding of God—his character and all his attributes—has a profound effect on how we live as Christians. Our view of God, our world and ourselves are inextricably linked. This is one of the core Christian foundation units completed in any Eastern undergraduate degree.
This unit looks at how Christians in different times and places have used the scriptures, along with the resources of their culture, to formulate belief and understand the world. It considers a variety of Christian belief systems and invites students to explore their own belief systems and appreciate how these have been shaped by past and present contexts.
