Missional Leadership in the 21st Century

Dr Kirk Franklin & Tim Meyers

Intensive
14th-15th January & 14th-16th April
Study Mode: Available online & on-campus

In this Unit, we will examine and reflect together on a range of topics that are directly relevant to effective, contemporary missional leadership. We will reflect upon, and seek to understand biblical and theological foundations of mission-focused leadership, and explore contemporary models of leadership, both within traditional ‘ministry’ contexts, and more holistically, across a range of settings and vocational contexts. In particular, we will examine the impact and implications of such influences as postmodernism, globalisation, culture, diversity and vocation, and disruptive events (for example, the Covid-19 pandemic) as a context for developing effective, agile and fruitful models of Christian leadership. Finally, we will reflect on how spirituality, character, imagination, and creativity shape our leadership, and our influence on others, and the systems and structures within organizations that either stimulate or restrict, effective and empowering leadership. On successful completion of this Unit, you will be able to appreciate and understand how to develop as a leader with greater effectiveness, fruitfulness, discernment, spiritual fulfilment and transformation impact.

Muhammad: A Christian Perspective

Dr Bernie Power & Dr Denis Savelyev

30th November – 5th February
Study Mode: Online only

In this unit we will study the life of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, from a Christian perspective.

We will look at the social, political and religious background of seventh century Arabia, and discuss the question of whether he actually existed. Then we follow the standard Muslim chronology of his life, looking particularly at his revelations, his military and political activities, his personal life and his relationships with women. Muslim perspectives are included through an extensive use of video clips.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to outline the significant events in the life of Muhammad, to understand the challenges and opportunities that he faced and how he dealt with them, to assess his personality and character from a biblical perspective, and to compare and contrast his life with that of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Global Theology and World Christianity

Dr David Ng

30th November – 5th February
Study Mode: Online only

With the massive growth of Christianity in Africa, Asia and Latin America, Christians are bringing new questions to theology that have seldom been asked in Western theology.

These questions are rooted in significant challenges that Christians face globally and cause us to rethink how we theologize in a changing world. As we reflect on Australia’s relationship with this global context and observe the movement of people and the establishment of migrant churches here, it is increasingly important that we engage in such global theological reflection.

In this unit, we not only raise these different global theological issues under the standard categories (God, Humanity, Christology, Ecclesiology etc.) but also reflect, assess and apply them in light of God’s mission today.
