The study of philosophy trains us to think critically. For students of the bible and theology it is particularly valuable because it allows us to examine ideas at their foundational level. It therefore enables us to become proficient theological thinkers who are able to explain and defend the Christian faith with analytical accuracy and critical acumen. The most influential Christian thinkers of history have all been astute philosophical thinkers. In order to think critically about theology, biblical studies, ethics, history and spirituality we must have some understanding of the philosophical approaches that undergird these disciplines. This unit is designed to introduce students to philosophy in a way that is clear and accessible by framing the field of philosophy as a one long discussion stretching from its beginnings in the Greek period to the present. This will give students a birds-eye perspective on the key themes of philosophy with particular emphasis on how this relates to Christian thought.
