The study of Philosophy trains us how to think critically and proficiently. For Christians it is particularly valuable because it deepens our theological discernment and makes us into more astute defenders and teachers of the Christian faith. Philosophy allows us to ‘lift the hood’ and analyse ideas that often get bandied around clumsily, ideas like knowledge, truth, meaning, belief, etc. This unit is designed to introduce students to the main currents of Western Philosophy from the Greek period to the present. Philosophy and Christian theology have always been intertwined. The disciplines of theology, hermeneutics, apologetics and ethics are all underpinned by certain philosophical conventions. A summary knowledge of philosophy is therefore highly valuable for students wanting to think critically about the Christian faith as well as the currents of thought that prevail in our culture.
