Pre or Co-requisites: Yes
The book of Isaiah has been called ‘the fifth Gospel’, thanks to its fruitfulness in messianic interpretation. It is not quite the longest book of the Old Testament, but in its scope and grandeur, it is in some ways the stand-out representative of the OT prophetic books and a vital doorway into our New Testament.
This epic book deals both with the Assyrian crisis of the prophet Isaiah’s own day and offers hope to the exiles in the aftermath of the conquest of Jerusalem by Babylon. Then in its future-oriented (eschatological) passages, it looks forward to a time when God’s reign is exercised through the city of Jerusalem, a vision taken up in the New Testament from the Gospels through to the book of Revelation. Isaiah is one of the great biblical books and well worthy of our careful attention.
