Unit Code: OT017-612
Pre or Co-requisites: Yes
The wisdom literature of the Old Testament, especially the entire books of Job, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, represent a very unique kind of Scripture. These books consider life issues, such as relationships, finance and commerce, health and disease, honour and shame, suffering, justice, righteousness and walking with God, that are remarkably relevant to our lives today. Yet the way this literature functions is less familiar than other parts of Scripture, and we need to understand wisdom as a genre if we are to gain maximum benefit from these books. This unit discusses the wisdom literature and traditions in the Old Testament and the Ancient Near East in their social setting. Special reference is made to the book of Job and the doctrines of God and humanity, creation, the fear of God, retribution and moral order.
