The Bachelor of Theology suits undergraduate students who are interested in attaining a high level of biblical mastery. It involves close attention to one or both of the biblical languages, Hebrew and Greek, and training in the techniques of biblical exegesis, with opportunity for close studies of several biblical books. In the suite of units covered, there is a concentration on biblical and theological units in comparison to other degree types.

Biblical Studies. Develop a strong working knowledge of the Bible’s original authors, historical context, major themes, and theological developments. Church History. Understand the impact of the early church and reformation on the Church of today. Languages and the Bible. Explore how the knowledge of God is developed and articulated through languages and develop skills to accurately and faithfully interpret the Bible. Leadership Skills. Develop your ability to lead, or pioneer, Church or mission work. Foundational and Transformative. Overview the major theological tenets of the Christian faith and engage thoughtfully with a range of ethical, theological and practical issues facing the church.

Structure

The Bachelor of Theology requires the satisfactory completion of 24 units totalling 288 credit points. A full-time rate consists of 3-4 units per semester, and part-time of 1-2 units per semester.

 

Biblical & Theological Foundation

  • Complete two units of Old Testament Introduction and two units of New Testament Introduction:
    • Old Testament Foundations OT001-512
    • Old Testament Prophets and Writings OT002-512
    • Jesus and the Gospels NT001-512
    • The Early New Testament Church NT002-512
  • Complete two Christianity in History units (CH)
  • Complete two Theology (TH) units

+ one further unit in either Theology (TH) or Philosophy & Ethics (PE)

 

Biblical Exegesis

  • Complete one language track:
    • New Testament Greek A LA005-612 &
    • New Testament Greek B LA006-612

OR

    • Biblical Hebrew A LA003-612 &
    • Biblical Hebrew B LA004-612
  • Complete a Biblical Exegesis Track (two 6cp units totalling one 12cp standard coursework unit):
    • Introduction to Biblical Interpretation BB008

+ Principles and Practice of Biblical Exegesis BB013 OR New Biblical Interpretation Unit (TBC)

  • Complete three Set Book units, including one each in both Old Testament (OT) and New Testament (NT), with two in original language.

Academic Qualifications

 
  • Satisfactorily completed Year 12 with an ATAR of 65 or above, or
  • Successful completion of a qualification at AQF Level 5 or above, or
  • Demonstrate academic suitability through a pre-entrance task.
 

Language Qualifications for NESB

 
  • Equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no band score lower than 6.0 in each subtest OR 10 years in Australia with English being the language primarily spoken both at home and work.
